Like many schools, we collected canned goods for Winnipeg Harvest, a local food bank. The collection sparked many questions. We wanted to know:
1. How much food had we collected?
2. How long would it take to eat all that food?
3. How expensive are groceries that some families are not able to afford enough to eat?
To answer these questions we arranged to volunteer at Winnipeg Harvest. Once there we wondered about the amount of food, packaging, hourly wages, how much we had been able to contribute, family budgets and the cost of food. With data gathered from this adventure we carried on to the grocery store. We explored further questions about ratios, decimals, best buys, discounts and taxes.
