Blueprints and Design
In lieu of a traditional pencil and paper exam, students in grade 10 Essential Math were challenged to design a storage shed for four outdoor items. At the hardware store, students selected their four items from the display area. They picked a variety of lawnmowers, snowblowers, shovels, rakes, patio furniture, garbage bins, ladders, garden hoses and tools. No two students made the same selections. Students then explored photos of storage sheds and began planning their design. Each of the items selected had to be measured and included in the plan. Once the general design was ready students determined the amount of and cost of the building materials required. Through this exam, students demonstrated their understanding of measurements, scale, rate, ratio, area, perimeter, angles, and trigonometry.
